July 5, 2004 Widespread Wind Damage

  • Occurred in a band starting near Carmi, Illinois just before noon.
  • The wind damage area crossed the cities of Evansville, Henderson, and Owensboro shortly after noon.
  • Tens of thousands of utility customers were still without power early on Tuesday morning, July 6.
  • Dozens of houses were damaged by falling trees. Other trees landed across roads, wires, and vehicles.
  • This area is the same area that was repeatedly struck by damaging winds and tornadoes during the last week of May.
  • The map below indicates where the major damage was concentrated. Wind gusts from 55 to 65 MPH were measured in this area, including a gust to 55 knots (63 MPH) at the Owensboro Airport.
