Severe Weather Outbreak on May 19, 2005

  • A prolonged period of severe weather affected our region on Thursday, May 19. The initial Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued at 11:15 A.M. All or part of the Paducah National Weather Service forecast area was under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until about 5:00 A.M. the following morning, May 20. A total of 52 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and 3 Tornado Warnings were issued.
  • A tornado touched down in northern Christian County, near the community of Kelly, which is north of Hopkinsville. See the storm damage survey here.  A couple of brief tornado touchdowns were also reported near the Todd-Christian County line along U.S. Highway 68 / Kentucky Highway 80.  A storm damage survey was conducted here as well.
  • Baseball size hail was reported near Dawson Springs, KY, along the Hopkins/Caldwell County border at 5:11 P.M. Windows were broken out of a house and vehicle.
  • Below is a graphic plot of preliminary severe storm reports from the Pennyrile region of western Kentucky. Tornado reports are in blue, with hail reports in green and wind reports in an off-shade of red. For a wider scale view of severe storm reports, click here. A complete text listing of preliminary severe storm reports is at the bottom of this page.
Plot of severe storm reports in the Pennyrile region of west KY on May 19, 2005
  • Following is a radar image from the Fort Campbell (KHPX) WSR-88D which shows the circulation that produced the tornado near the Christian-Todd County line about 10 to 15 minutes before this image was taken.  If you look closely, you'll notice the circulation north of the radar in west-central Todd County, near the Christian-Todd County line.  Cool green/blue shades are inbound velocities, and warm red/yellow shades are outbound velocities.  The potential for tornadic activity was most likely at the junction of the inbound and outbound velocities.

  • Storms repeatedly moved over some of the same areas of western Kentucky, southwest Indiana, and southeast Illinois. Very heavy rainfall from 2 to around 3 inches occurred. Isolated flash flooding was reported. Click here for a rainfall and temperature summary for the 24-hour period ending at 7 A.M. May 20.
  • A radar-estimated rainfall map is shown below. Amounts were overestimated in some areas by around 25 percent due to hail contamination. Amounts below 0.30 inch have been filtered out. Green shades represent 1 to 2.5 inches. Yellow and gold shades represent 2.5 to 4 inches.
