PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WILMINGTON NC
900 AM EDT THUR MARCH 19 2015

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS DECLARED MAR 15TH THROUGH MARCH
21ST AS FLOOD SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK. MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY...DAILY
STATEMENTS WILL FEATURE INFORMATION ABOUT A DIFFERENT FLOOD RELATED
TOPIC.

TODAYS TOPIC...KNOWING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A WATCH AND A WARNING.

IT IS VITAL TO YOUR SAFETY TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE.

FLASH FLOODS ARE EXACTLY WHAT THE NAME SUGGESTS...FLOODS THAT CAN HAPPEN
IN A FLASH! CAUSES OF FLASH FLOODS INCLUDE HEAVY RAIN...ICE OR DEBRIS JAMS...
AND LEVEE OR DAM FAILURE. THESE FLOODS EXHIBIT A RAPID RISE IN
WATER OVER LOW-LYING AREAS. THERE ARE MANY REASONS THAT FLASH
FLOODS OCCUR...BUT ONE OF THE MOST COMMON IS COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF
RAINFALL FROM THUNDERSTORMS. THESE SUDDEN DOWNPOURS CAN RAPIDLY
CHANGE THE WATER LEVEL IN A STREAM OR CREEK AND TURN SMALL WATERWAYS
INTO VIOLENT ...RAGING RIVERS. URBAN AREAS ARE ESPECIALLY PRONE TO
FLASH FLOODS DUE TO THEIR LARGE AMOUNTS OF CONCRETE AND ASPHALT
SURFACES WHICH DO NOT ALLOW WATER TO PENETRATE THEM AND RESULT IN
MORE RUNOFF THAN RAIN FALLING OVER SOIL. AVOID LOW-LYING AREAS AND
STORM DRAINS WHEN HEAVY RAIN IS IN YOUR AREA.
