PARTLY CLOUDY TO MOSTLY CLEAR SKIES WERE PRESENT ACROSS THE
COALFIELDS THIS MORNING. SOME INSTANCES OF PATCHY VALLEY FOG WERE
REPORTED. TEMPERATURES AT 7 AM WERE GENERALLY IN THE 50S ACROSS
THE REGION. TYPICAL LOWS FOR THE FIRST PART OF MAY ARE IN THE
LOWER 50S.

BY MID AFTERNOON...EASTERN KENTUCKY WAS UNDER PARTLY CLOUDY SKIES
WITH ABUNDANT SUNSHINE. BY LATE AFTERNOON...ISOLATED SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS WERE MOVING ACROSS THE SOUTHEASTERN PORTION OF THE
REGION. TEMPERATURES CLIMBED INTO THE MID 80S ACROSS THE REGION.
THESE TEMPERATURES ARE TEN OR MORE DEGREES WARMER THAN NORMAL
HIGHS IN THE MID 70S FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR.

MOST OF THE AREA CAN EXPECT TO SEE CONTINUED DRY WEATHER THROUGH
THE FIRST PART OF THE WEEKEND. HOWEVER...LOCATIONS IN THE
SOUTHEASTERN PORTION HAVE ISOLATED SHOWER AND THUNDERSTORM
CHANCES...MAINLY DURING THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING HOURS ON
THURSDAY AND FRIDAY. SLIGHT RAIN CHANCES WILL THEN OVERSPREAD
EASTERN KENTUCKY ON SUNDAY. LOWS TONIGHT WILL RANGE FROM THE MID
50S IN THE VALLEYS TO THE LOWER 60S ON THE RIDGES. HIGHS ON
THURSDAY WILL BE IN THE MID 80S.

ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...IN 1984...SEVERE WEATHER
OCCURRED ACROSS EASTERN KENTUCKY. DURING THE AFTERNOON...A TORNADO
MOVED ACROSS LAUREL COUNTY...CAUSING 8 INJURIES AND LEAVING 75
FAMILIES HOMELESS. NINE MOBILE HOMES WERE DESTROYED...AND 150
BUILDINGS WERE DAMAGED. NUMEROUS TREES WERE UPROOTED...AND MANY
LOCATIONS WERE WITHOUT POWER. LARGE HAIL WAS ALSO REPORTED WITH
THIS STORM. IN CLAY COUNTY...DAMAGING WINDS FROM A SEVERE
THUNDERSTORM PARTIALLY BLEW THE ROOF OFF THE CLAY COUNTY HIGH
SCHOOL. IN DOWNTOWN MANCHESTER...LARGE WINDOWS WERE BLOWN OUT AND
3 MOBILE HOMES WERE DESTROYED. IN WAYNE AND PULASKI
COUNTIES...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WINDS DAMAGED OR DESTROYED
APPROXIMATELY 30 BUILDINGS...INCLUDING THE PULASKI COUNTY HIGH
SCHOOL. TWO INJURIES WERE REPORTED WITH THESE STORMS.
