AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PENDLETON OR
225 AM PDT THU APR 2 2015

.SHORT TERM...TODAY THROUGH SATURDAY...PROLONGED NORTHWEST WINDS
HAVE KEPT TEMPERATURES UP ACROSS THE YAKIMA AND KITTIAS VALLEYS THIS
MORNING. SOME SPOT AREAS LIKE SUNNYSIDE AND WHITE SWAN HAVE FALLEN
WITHIN A DEGREE OR TWO OF FREEZING...BUT A WIDESPREAD FREEZE MAY NOT
OCCUR DUE TO THE LINGERING NORTHWEST WINDS. WILL CONTINUE THE FREEZE
WARNING THOUGH AS TEMPERATURES COULD STILL FALL OVER THE NEXT 3 TO 4
HOURS.

WEAK HIGH PRESSURE WILL BE OVER THE AREA TODAY THROUGH FRIDAY
AFTERNOON. AS A RESULT PARTLY CLOUDY TO MOSTLY CLEAR SKIES CAN BE
EXPECTED. TEMPERATURES SHOULD FEEL PRETTY MILD...IN THE MID 50S TO
LOWER 60S TODAY WITH FAIRLY LIGHT WINDS. MOUNTAINS CAN EXPECT HIGHS
IN THE MID 40S TO LOWER 50S. ISOLATED RESIDUAL SHOWERS FROM THE
PREVIOUS SYSTEM WILL BE POSSIBLE OVER THE NORTHEAST MOUNTAINS
TODAY. SHOWERS SHOULD BE PRETTY LOCALIZED AND SHORT LIVED. BY THIS
EVENING AND OVERNIGHT SHOWER POTENTIAL WILL BE OVER...AND
TEMPERATURES ONCE AGAIN ARE EXPECTED TO BE NEAR FREEZING ACROSS MANY
LOCATIONS. WILL WAIT FOR THE DAY SHIFT TO SEE IF ANY MORE FREEZE
WARNINGS NEED TO BE ISSUED.

FRIDAY AFTERNOON WESTERLY FLOW WILL START TO SHIFT SOUTHWEST AND
MOISTURE AHEAD OF A FRONTAL SYSTEM WILL ALLOW FOR SOME SHOWERS OVER
THE NORTHEAST MOUNTAINS. BY FRIDAY EVENING A WEAK COLD FRONT IS
EXPECTED TO MOVE THROUGH...WITH A CHANCE FOR CONVECTIVE EVENING
SHOWERS...THUNDERSTORMS COULD NOT BE RULED OUT...BUT CONFIDENCE IS
VERY LOW AT THIS TIME. WITH THE COOLER AIR IN PLACE...EXPECT
SATURDAYS HIGHS TO BE ABOUT 3 TO 5 DEGREES COOLER. FLOW WILL BE
MOSTLY WESTERLY AND SOME LIGHT SHOWERS ALONG THE LEE SIDE OF THE
CASCADES WILL BE POSSIBLE...AS WELL AS THE NORTHEAST MOUNTAINS.
WEBER

.LONG TERM...SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY...A LARGE SCALE UPPER
LEVEL TROUGH WILL APPROACH THE REGION SATURDAY NIGHT AND MOVE ACROSS
THE REGION SUNDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHT. THIS WILL BRING A GOOD CHANCE OF
SHOWERS AND MOUNTAIN SNOW SHOWERS ESPECIALLY DURING THE DAY SUNDAY.
INSTABILITY PARAMETERS DONT LOOK AS FAVORABLE FOR THUNDERSTORMS IN
THE LATEST GFS COMPARED TO EARLIER FORECAST MODEL RUNS. HOWEVER
THERE COULD STILL BE ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS SUNDAY AFTERNOON IN
CENTRAL OREGON. THERE IS ALSO SOME THREAT FOR ACCUMULATING SNOW
ABOVE 4000 FEET OVER THE CENTRAL AND EASTERN MOUNTAINS. A NARROW
RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE WILL BE OVER THE AREA ON MONDAY WITH ONLY
LIMITED CHANCES FOR PRECIPITATION. THEN ANOTHER UPPER LEVEL TROUGH
WILL AFFECT THE AREA ON TUESDAY ESPECIALLY WEST AND SOUTH AS IT DIGS
INTO CALIFORNIA. THERE WILL BE RAIN SHOWERS AND A LIMITED THREAT FOR
THUNDERSTORMS TUESDAY AFTERNOON BUT BEING SEVERAL DAYS OUT WILL HOLD
OFF PUTTING THUNDER IN THE FORECAST FOR NOW. FOR WEDNESDAY AND
THURSDAY...AN UPPER LEVEL RIDGE WILL RETURN TO THE REGION WITH MUCH
WARMER TEMPERATURES AND AND MOSTLY DRY CONDITIONS. 78
