AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SALT LAKE CITY UT
1037 AM MDT SAT APR 25 2015

.SYNOPSIS...A PACIFIC STORM SYSTEM WILL MOVE THROUGH THE AREA
THIS WEEKEND. HIGH PRESSURE WILL RETURN BEGINNING MONDAY AND
REMAIN THROUGH MOST OF THE WEEK.

&&

.DISCUSSION...A FAIRLY LARGE UPPER TROF EXTENDS FROM NWRN WA TO
SRN CA THIS MORNING WITH A STRONG VORT MAX IN THE BASE OF THE TROF
DIGGING SEWD. THIS FEATURE IS DEEPENING THE ENTIRE TROF INTO THE
GREAT BASIN.

THE FRONTAL BOUNDARY THAT PUSHED THRU THE CWA OVERNIGHT LAYS
ACROSS SRN UT AT THIS TIME. SHOWERS HAVE DIMINISHED SOMEWHAT ALONG
THIS BOUNDARY BUT THE WRN END SHOULD LIGHT UP AGAIN BEFORE NOON
AS THE SRN VORT MAX STARTS TO SWING EWD. PRECIP COVERAGE CONTINUES
TO INCREASE ACROSS MUCH OF THE CWA THRU THE AFTN AS THIS FEATURE
MOVES INTO SWRN UT.

THE NORTH STABILIZED THIS MORNING IN THE WAKE OF LAST NIGHTS RAIN
AND LOOKS TO BE ONE OF THE LAST AREAS TO FILL IN TODAY AS THE
UPPER TROF APPROACHES.

EXPECT PRECIP TO BECOME WIDESPREAD ACROSS THE ENTIRE CWA THIS EVE
AS THE SRN VORT MAX SHIFTS ACROSS SRN UT AND THE MAIN UPPER TROF
MOVES INTO THE STATE. PRECIP BEGINS TO WIND DOWN FROM THE WEST
EARLY SUN AS THE TROF AXIS MOVES IN AND THE SRN VORT STARTS TO
CLOSE OFF INTO A LOW NEAR LK POWELL.

SNOW AMOUNTS IN THE MTNS APPEAR TO BE A LITTLE MARGINAL FOR AN
ADVISORY TONIGHT BUT THERE SHOULD BE AT LEAST SOME IMPACT TO
TRAVEL OVER BASICALLY ALL MTN PASSES. SO AN IMPACT BASED WINTER
WEATHER HIGHLIGHT COULD BE WARRANTED BUT WILL COORDINATE WITH
PARTNERS BEFORE ISSUING ANY PRODUCTS.

PRECIP WANES THRU THE DAY SUN AS THE CLOSED LOW CONSOLIDATES AND
SHIFTS EAST WITH THE FLOW DEVELOPING AN ELY COMPONENT. SOME
LINGERING MOISTURE KEEPS A THREAT OF LIGHT PRECIP GOING OVER THE
NERN CWA INTO MON.

UPDATED EARLIER TO LOWER POPS NRN UT THIS MORNING AND FOR A SMALL
AREA OF THE NORTH THIS AFTN. ALSO MADE A FEW TWEAKS TO WINDS AND
SKY COVER. NO ADDITIONAL UPDATES PLANNED.

&&

.AVIATION...LIGHT SOUTHEASTERLY SURFACE WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO
GRADUALLY INCREASE AT THE KSLC TERMINAL TODAY. CIGS ARE EXPECTED TO
FILL AND LOWER LATE THIS AFTERNOON AS ANOTHER ROUND OF SHOWERS
ENCROACHES FROM THE WEST. LIGHT RAIN AND ERRATIC WINDS WILL BE THE
PRIMARY THREAT BEGINNING AROUND 00Z. MVFR RAINFALL WITH CIGS BELOW
6000FT AGL ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP BETWEEN 01-03Z AND REMAIN IN
PLACE FOR MUCH OF THE OVERNIGHT HOURS...WITH A COLD FRONTAL PASSAGE
SWITCHING WINDS TO THE NORTHWEST BETWEEN 07-09Z.

&&

.SLC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
UT...NONE.
WY...NONE.
