AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LAS VEGAS NV
130 AM PDT SUN APR 26 2015

.SYNOPSIS...SHOWER ACTIVITY WILL BE WINDING DOWN TONIGHT WITH JUST A
FEW STRAY SHOWERS POSSIBLE IN FAR EASTERN MOHAVE COUNTY SUNDAY.
GUSTY NORTH WINDS ARE EXPECTED ACROSS MUCH OF THE REGION TODAY
ESPECIALLY ACROSS THE SOUTHERN GREAT BASIN AND DOWN THE COLORADO
RIVER. A WARMING TREND WILL COMMENCE MONDAY WITH HIGHS RISING ABOVE
NORMAL BY TUESDAY.
&&

.SHORT TERM...THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT.

POTENT TROUGH HAS PUSHED EASTWARD THIS EVENING WITH SHOWER ACTIVITY
WINDING DOWN ACROSS MOST OF THE AREA. SOME LINGERING SHOWERS CAN BE
EXPECTED ACROSS MOHAVE COUNTY TONIGHT WITH JUST VERY ISOLATED
ACTIVITY REMAINING BY THIS AFTERNOON ACROSS FAR EASTERN MOHAVE
COUNTY.

GUSTY NORTH WINDS BEHIND THE COLD FRONT WILL BE THE MAIN NOTICABLE
WEATHER FEATURE TODAY ALONG WITH COOL TEMPERATURES. WINDS TODAY WILL
BE STRONGEST ACROSS OUR SOUTHERN GREAT BASIN ZONES (NAMELY ESMERALDA
AND CENTRAL NYE COUNTIES) AS WELL AS DOWN THE COLORADO RIVER. WINDS
WILL ALSO BE LOCALLY STRONG ACROSS PARTS OF INYO COUNTY TOMORROW
EVENING INTO THE NIGHTTIME PERIODS SO THE DAY SHIFT MAY WANT TO KEEP
AN EYE ON TRENDS OUT THERE...BUT RIGHT NOW WINDS LOOK A BIT BELOW
ADVISORY LEVEL.

MONDAY AND TUESDAY...STRONG RIDGING NUDGES BACK INTO THE SOUTHWEST
ALLOWING TEMPERATURES TO CLIMB ABOVE NORMAL VERY QUICKLY. IN FACT
LAS VEGAS LOOKS TO APPROACH 90 BY TUESDAY AFTERNOON WITH 90S
ALONG THE COLORADO RIVER...AND TRIPLE DIGITS LIKELY IN DEATH VALLEY.

.LONG TERM...WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY.

HIGH PRESSURE WILL BEGIN TO BREAK DOWN AND SLIDE SOUTHEAST WEDNESDAY
AS AN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE MOVES THROUGH THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. WE
SHOULD SEE AN INCREASE IN SOUTHERLY WINDS, YET REMAIN DRY AS
MOISTURE WILL BE LIMITED AND WELL TO OUR NORTH. THE LOW-LEVEL
BOUNDARY ASSOCIATED WITH THIS LOW WILL EVENTUALLY SLIDE SOUTH AND
BECOME QUASI-STATIONARY WEST TO EAST ACROSS CENTRAL NEVADA THURSDAY
AND FRIDAY. MODELS HINT AT THE COMBINATION OF THIS BOUNDARY AND
MEAGER MOISTURE SPARKING A FEW AFTERNOON/EARLY EVENING SHOWERS AND
STORMS ACROSS CENTRAL NEVADA, PERHAPS ACROSS PORTIONS OF NORTHERN
INYO, ESMERALDA, NYE, AND LINCOLN COUNTIES. WILL AT LEAST BE
SOMETHING TO WATCH FOR THURSDAY AND FRIDAY, BUT HAVE KEPT THE AREA
DRY FOR NOW. THEN, ANOTHER LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM IS PROJECTED TO
APPROACH THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST SATURDAY OR SUNDAY. MODELS DIFFER ON
TIMING AND STRENGTH AND THERE IS NOTICEABLE ENSEMBLE SPREAD. THIS
TROUGH COULD GENERATE BREEZY SOUTHERLY WINDS AND INCREASE CLOUDS A
BIT. AS FOR TEMPERATURES, EXPECT TO BE AROUND 10 DEGREES ABOVE
NORMAL FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY, AND PERHAPS FRIDAY
BEFORE TRENDING A FEW DEGREES COOLER FOR THE WEEKEND. FOR THE LAS
VEGAS VALLEY, THAT MEANS LOW AND MID 90S TRENDING TO MID AND UPPER
80S FOR THE WEEKEND.

 &&

.AVIATION...FOR MCCARRAN...WEST-NORTHWEST WINDS OF 10 TO 20 KTS WITH
GUSTS TO 25 KTS EXPECTED THROUGH 18Z THOUGH WINDS MAY COMPETE WITH
MORE SOUTHERLY COMPONENTS THROUGH EARLY MORNING. WINDS WILL BECOME
MORE NORTH-NORTHWEST AFTER 18Z WITH SPEEDS OF 15 TO 25KTS AND GUSTS
TO 30 KTS. OTHERWISE MOSTLY CLEAR SKIES EXPECTED. GUSTY NORTH WINDS
WILL PERSIST INTO SUNDAY NIGHT.

.FOR THE REST OF SOUTHERN NEVADA...NORTHWEST ARIZONA...AND SOUTHEAST
CALIFORNIA...GUSTY NORTH WINDS EXPECTED AREA WIDE IN THE 15 TO 25KT
RANGE WITH GUSTS TO 30 KTS. STRONGER WINDS EXPECTED DOWN THE
COLORADO RIVER AND NEAR THE SOUTHERN GREAT BASIN WHERE GUSTS WILL
EXCEED 35KTS. IMPROVING SKY CONDITIONS EXPECTED BY EARLY MORNING
WITH SCT-BKN CLOUD COVER REMAINING EAST OF A KHII-KIGM-KSGU LINE FOR
THE DAYTIME PERIOD. GUSTY WINDS WILL PERSIST OVERNIGHT.
