MARINE WEATHER DISCUSSION FOR N PACIFIC OCEAN
NWS OCEAN PREDICTION CENTER WASHINGTON DC
122 AM PDT THU MAY 7 2015

.FORECAST DISCUSSION: MAJOR FEATURES/WINDS/SEAS/SIGNIFICANT
.WEATHER FOR THE NORTH PACIFIC N OF 30N AND E OF 150W.

ASCAT PASS FROM 05Z SHOWS GALE CONDITIONS ALONG THE NRN CA
CST...EXTENDING INTO THE INNER OFFSHORE WATERS. FURTHER N...WINDS
OVR PZ5 WATERS ARE GENERALLY NW 15-20 KT. CURRENT OBS ALONG THE
CA CST INDICATE SEAS NR 16 FT...WHICH AGREES WELL WITH LATEST
ALTIMETER PASS OFF THE CENTRAL CA CST. THE TYPICAL SUMMERTIME
PATTERN WILL CONTINUE OVR THE CA WATERS OVER THE NEXT 48 HRS OR SO
AS THE RIDGE/TROF COMBINATION HOLDS FIRM...THUS PROVIDING GALE
FORCE CONDITIONS ALONG THE NRN AND CENTRAL CA CST. A WEAK COLD
FRONT WILL CROSS THE WATERS ON DAY 3. THIS WILL WEAKEN THE RIDGE
ENOUGH TO CAUSE THE WINDS TO DIMINISH SUB GALE. ONCE THE FRONT
DISSIPATES EXPECT THE GRADIENT TO REBOUND SOMEWHAT AS HIGH PRES
REBUILDS W OF THE WATERS. ALTHOUGH ATTM I AM NOT EXPECTING THE
GRADIENT TO REBOUND AS STRONG AS IT IS CUURENTLY...THEREFOR EXPECT
MAX WINDS TO BE NR 30 KT...WITH SLIGHT CHANCE OF GALES TO
OCCUR...MAINLY IN COASTAL ZONES ALONG NRN CA CST. FURTHER N...A
RIDGE AXIS IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN JUST W OF THE PZ5 WATERS...WHILE
SOME TROFFINESS WILL OCCUR ALONG VANISL AFTER DAY 3...FURTHER
ENHANCING THE WINDS THERE. THE GLOBAL MODELS ARE IN PRETTY GOOD
AGREEMENT THROUGHOUT THE TIME PERIOD...WITH SOME MINOR
DIFFERENCES...MAINLY IN THE STRENGTH OF THE BL WINDS. THE 00Z GFS
REMAINS VERY CONSISTANT WITH PRIOR RUNS. WILL CONTINUE TO POP WIND
GRIDS WITH THE 30M GFS...WHICH IS A BETTER REPRESENTATION OF THE
WIND FIELD THAN THE ECMWF.

SEAS...BOTH THE ENP AND ECMWF WAVE GUID ARE PRETTY SIMILAR AND
APPREA REASONABLE. THE ECMWF IS SLIGHTLY HIGHER IN THE FIRST 24
HRS THAN THE ENP. THIS MATCHES UP BETTER WITH CURRENT
OBS...THEREFOR WILL POP WAVE GRIDS WITH ECMWF THROUGH THE PERIODS
OF GALES...THEN TRANSITION TO HTE ENP WAVE GUID.

.EXTRATROPICAL STORM SURGE GUIDANCE...N/A.

.WARNINGS...PRELIMINARY.
