DROUGHT INFORMATION STATEMENT

CORRECTED FOR SPELLING

...DROUGHT INCREASES OVER EASTERN UTAH AND WESTERN COLORADO....

SYNOPSIS...

DRY CONDITIONS PERSIST OVER EASTERN UTAH AND WESTERN COLORADO FOR
THE LAST PORTION OF THE WINTER AND INTO EARLY SPRING. ALONG WITH THE
LACK OF MOISTURE...TEMPERATURES HAVE BEEN WELL ABOVE NORMAL.

WINTER SNOW ACCUMULATION HAS BEEN BELOW TO WELL BELOW NORMAL FOR THE
ENTIRE REGION. THE EXCEPTION HAS BEEN ALONG AND NEAR THE
CONTINENTIAL DIVIDE WHERE SNOWPACK WAS CLOSER TO NORMAL FOR MOST OF
THE COLD SEASON. OVERALL PRECIPITATION FOR THE WATER YEAR FOR THE
REST OF WESTERN COLORADO AND EASTERN UTAH RANGED FROM 45 TO 75
PERCENT OF NORMAL.

BY APRIL 1ST SNOWPACK RANGED FROM 55 PERCENT OF NORMAL OVER THE
SOUTHWESTERN BASINS TO 76 PERCENT OF NORMAL OVER THE UPPER COLORADO
BASIN. THIS MAY BE SLIGHTLY MISLEADING WITH SNOWPACK IN THE LOWER
PART OF THE UPPER COLORADO BASIN NEAR 53 PERCENT OF NORMAL. EASTERN
UTAH HAD LESS SNOWPACK THAN WESTERN COLORADO RANGING FROM 19 PERCENT
TO 42 PERCENT OF NORMAL.

TEMPERATURES WERE 2 TO 6 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH
AND 2 TO 8 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL FOR THE PERIOD FROM JANUARY THROUGH
MARCH.

AREAS IN D2...SEVERE DROUGHT...INCLUDE ALL OR PORTIONS OF ALL
COUNTIES IN WESTERN COLORADO WITH THE EASTERN EXTENT OF D2 RUNNING
TO FAR WESTERN ROUTT...EAGLE COUNTIES AND HALF OF PITKIN AND
GUNNISON COUNTIES. SEVERE DROUGHT IS ALSO OVER
DAGGETT...UINTAH...GRAND AND NORTHEASTERN SAN JUAN COUNTY UTAH.

SUMMARY OF IMPACTS...

SEVERE DROUGHT...D2...IMPACTS INCLUDE HIGH WILDLAND FIRE
DANGER...CROP AND PASTURE LOSSES...AND WATER SHORTAGES AND
RESTRICTIONS. WATER SUPPLY RESERVOIRS COULD HAVE LESS WATER FOR THE
WARM SEASON AND WELLS COULD START TO LOWER OR EVEN DRY OUT.

A NUMBER OF AREAS ARE EXPERIENCING SOME OF THESE IMPACTS...AND IF
CONDITIONS PERSIST THESE IMPACTS WILL BECOME MORE WIDESPREAD.

CLIMATE SUMMARY...

WINTER SEASON SNOW PACK IS MUCH BELOW NORMAL FOR THE HIGHER
ELEVATIONS OF THE AFFECTED AREA. VALLEY PRECIPITATION HAS ALSO BEEN
MUCH BELOW NORMAL SINCE THE FIRST OF THE YEAR EXCEPT THE FAR
SOUTHWESTERN PART OF SAN JUAN COUNTY UTAH. TEMPERATURES HAVE BEEN
WELL ABOVE NORMAL FOR THE WINTER SEASON.

PRECIPITATION/TEMPERATURE OUTLOOK FOR WESTERN COLORADO AND EASTERN
UTAH...

THERE IS AN EQUAL CHANCE OF EITHER ABOVE OR BELOW NORMAL
TEMPERATURES AND PRECIPITATION FOR APRIL. BETTER THAN AVERAGE
CHANCES OF ABOVE NORMAL PRECIPITATION ARE INDICATED FOR MAY THROUGH
JULY FOR EASTERN UTAH AND WESTERN COLORADO.

CURRENT OBSERVATIONS SHOW THAT THE ENSO CYCLE IS A WEAK EL NINO.
THERE HAS BEEN LITTLE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE ENSO CYCLE AND WEATHER
OVER THE REGION THIS SEASON.

HYDROLOGIC SUMMARY...

AVERAGE SEVEN DAY AND 28 DAY STREAM FLOWS HAVE BEEN ABOVE TO MUCH
ABOVE NORMAL FOR THE AFFECTED BASINS IN SOUTHWESTERN COLORADO AND
EASTERN UTAH. THE WARM TEMPERATURES AND LACK OF ADDITIONAL SNOWFALL
HAS LED TO AN EARLY START TO SNOW MELT.

NEXT ISSUANCE DATE...

THIS PRODUCT WILL BE UPDATED IF CONDITIONS BECOME WORSE AND THERE
ARE SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN CONDITIONS.
