PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GREENVILLE-SPARTANBURG SC
134 PM EDT MON APR 20 2015

...TORNADO SAFETY RULES....

AN OUTBREAK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS AND TORNADOES IS EXPECTED
ACROSS THE AREA TODAY. THIS IS AN UNUSUAL WEATHER SITUATION FOR
THE WESTERN CAROLINAS AND NORTHEAST GEORGIA...AS SOME OF THE
TORNADOES COULD BE MUCH STRONGER THAN THOSE THAT TYPICALLY AFFECT
THE REGION. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE
WEATHER TODAY. CONSIDER POSTPONING UNNECESSARY TRIPS OR EVENTS.
MONITOR NOAA ALL HAZARDS WEATHER RADIO OR LOCAL NEWS MEDIA
OUTLETS FOR THE LATEST WEATHER INFORMATION.

REMEMBER...A TORNADO WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE FOR
THE DEVELOPMENT OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING
TORNADOES. A TORNADO WARNING MEANS A TORNADO HAS BEEN SIGHTED...
OR DOPPLER RADAR INDICATES A HIGH POTENTIAL THAT A TORNADO IS
IMMINENT. A TORNADO WATCH IS MEANT TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF THE
TORNADO POTENTIAL. A TORNADO WARNING MEANS IMMEDIATE ACTION IS
REQUIRED TO PROTECT LIFE AND PROPERTY.

THE SAFEST PLACE TO BE DURING A TORNADO IS BELOW GROUND...EITHER
IN A BASEMENT OR UNDERGROUND SHELTER. IF YOU CAN/T GET BELOW
GROUND... SEEK SHELTER ON THE LOWEST LEVEL OF AN OFFICE
BUILDING...HOUSE...OR OTHER STURDY STRUCTURE. PLACE AS MANY WALLS
AND FLOORS BETWEEN YOU AND THE OUTSIDE AS IS PRACTICAL. COVER
YOURSELF WITH BLANKETS...A MATTRESS...ANYTHING THAT MAY PROVIDE
PROTECTION FROM FLYING DEBRIS. TAKE SPECIAL CARE TO COVER YOUR
HEAD AND FACE. REMEMBER...UNLESS YOU ARE IN A MOBILE HOME...YOU
SHOULD NOT LEAVE YOUR HOME OR PLACE OF BUSINESS. PEOPLE HAVE BEEN
KILLED ATTEMPTING TO FLEE TORNADOES AFTER LEAVING ADEQUATE
SHELTER.

MOBILE HOMES OFFER LITTLE IF ANY PROTECTION FROM EVEN WEAK
TORNADOES. THEY SHOULD BE ABANDONED FOR STURDIER SHELTER. IF
YOU LIVE IN A MOBILE HOME...YOU SHOULD PREPARE A SAFETY PLAN NOW.
CONSIDER CONTACTING A NEARBY NEIGHBOR WHO LIVES IN A FRAME
HOME...OR THAT HAS AN UNDERGROUND SHELTER. MAKE ARRANGEMENTS NOW
TO SEEK REFUGE IN CASE OF A TORNADO. IF YOU CANNOT GAIN ACCESS TO
ADEQUATE SHELTER...SEEK OUT A LOW SPOT OR DEPRESSION AWAY FROM
POWER LINES AND TREES. LIE FACE DOWN AND MAKE YOURSELF AS SMALL
A TARGET AS POSSIBLE. COVER YOUR HEAD TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM
FLYING DEBRIS.

IF YOU ARE IN A VEHICLE...DO NOT TRY TO OUTRUN A TORNADO. ABANDON
YOUR VEHICLE FOR A STURDY SHELTER. IF ONE IS NOT AVAILABLE...SEEK
OUT A DITCH OR DEPRESSION AWAY FROM THE ROAD AND AWAY FROM TREES
AND POWER LINES. DO NOT SEEK SHELTER BENEATH HIGHWAY OVERPASSES.

STAY TUNED TO NOAA ALL HAZARDS WEATHER RADIO AND LOCAL NEWS MEDIA
FOR LATER STATEMENTS...WATCHES...AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS.
