HAWAIIAN ISLANDS SATELLITE INTERPRETATION MESSAGE
NWS CENTRAL PACIFIC HURRICANE CENTER HONOLULU HI
1230 UTC SAT APR 25 2015

BASED ON DATA THROUGH 1200 UTC APRIL 25 2015

A SLOW MOVING COLD FRONT LOCATED ABOUT 150 MILES NORTHWEST OF KAUAI
IS PRODUCING A 250 MILE-WIDE CLOUD BAND THAT STRADDLES THE 160W
LONGITUDE FROM 30N TO 24N THEN ARCS SOUTHWEST OVER 20N 163W. THE
CLOUD BAND DIMINISHES IN WIDTH FARTHER SOUTH BUT IS STILL
DISCERNIBLE TO 14N170W. EMBEDDED TOWERING CUMULUS CAN BE DISCERNED
WITHIN THE CLOUD BAND ABOUT 50 MILES WEST OF KAUAI. NORTH OF 25N...
THUNDERSTORM TOPS ARE REACHING 40 THOUSAND FEET. THE SURFACE LOW
ASSOCIATED WITH THE FRONT IS CENTERED OVER 28N166W AND IS MOVING
SLOWLY TOWARD THE NORTHEAST. A SWIRL IN THE LOW LEVEL CLOUDS
DISCERNS THE POSITION OF THE LOW. WEST OF THE LOW...BETWEEN 170W AND
THE DATELINE FROM 20N TO 30N...BROKEN LOW CLOUDS ARE MOVING SOUTH
AND SOUTHWEST AT 20 TO 30 MPH.

EAST OF THE LOW AND HAWAIIAN ISLANDS...LOW CLOUDS ARE MOVING WEST AT
15 TO 25 MPH PROPELLED BY HIGH PRESSURE CENTERED NEAR 31N 140W.
OVERCAST LOW CLOUDS DOMINATE THE AREA BETWEEN 140W AND 150W FROM 10N
TO 30N WHILE SCATTERED TO BROKEN LOW CLOUDS COVER THE REST OF THE
AREA EAST OF 155W TO 140W FROM 10N TO 30N.

HIGH CLOUDS DENOTING THE SUBTROPICAL JET 6 HOURS AGO HAVE BEEN
STEADILY DISAPPEARING OVER THAT TIME. HOWEVER...WATER VAPOR IMAGERY
DEPICTS THE JET MOVING EASTWARD AND AS OF 2AM IS LOCATED OVER THE
BIG ISLAND. THE JET STRETCHES FROM 10N165W TO THE BIG ISLAND TO
25N140W. SATELLITE DERIVED CLOUD MOTION SHOWS THE REMAINING HIGH
CLOUDS ARE MOVING AT 60 TO 80 MPH TOWARD THE NORTHEAST.

OVER HAWAII...THE AFOREMENTIONED CLOUD BAND IS PUSHING OVERCAST LOW
AND MID CLOUDS OVER KAUAI WITH EMBEDDED SHOWERS. PATCHES OF SHOWERS
AND CLOUDY SKIES SURROUND OAHU AND WESTERN MAUI COUNTY WITH PARTLY
CLOUDY SKIES OVER THE ACTUAL ISLANDS. BOTH MAUI AND THE BIG ISLAND
HAVE CLOUDY SKIES ALONG THE WINDWARD SLOPES WITH PARTLY CLOUDY
SKIES ELSEWHERE.

IN THE DEEP TROPICS...SCATTERED MODERATE TO STRONG THUNDERSTORMS ARE
FIRING ALONG THE INTERTROPICAL CONVERGENCE ZONE BETWEEN 152W AND
170W FROM 02N TO 08N...WITH ISOLATED MODERATE THUNDERSTORMS FOUND
ELSEWHERE. THUNDERSTORM TOPS ARE REACHING AS HIGH AS 55 THOUSAND
FEET.
