THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN PITTSBURGH PA HAS CONFIRMED A
MICROBURST /STRAIGHT LINE WIND DAMAGE/ NEAR PLUM IN ALLEGHENY
COUNTY WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA ON APRIL 9 2015.

A NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE STORM SURVEY SHOWED A MICROBURST OCCURRED
CLOSE TO 6:25 PM EDT THURSDAY EVENING. MOST DAMGE WAS TO HARDWOOD TREES
BEING SNAPPED AND UPROOTED...WITH RELATIVELY MINOR DAMAGE TO A FEW
HOMES IN THE RAMPART SUB DIVISION IN PLUM. SOME PIECES OF SIDING
WERE BLOWN OFF HOMES...WITH SOME DAMAGE TO OUT STRUCTURES DUE TO
FALLING TREES.

A MICROBURST IS A CONVECTIVE DOWNDRAFT WITH AN AFFECTED OUTFLOW
AREA OF LESS THAN 2 1/2 MILES WIDE AND PEAK WINDS LASTING LESS
THAN 5 MINUTES. STRAIGHT-LINE WINDS ARE GENERALLY ANY WIND THAT
IS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH ROTATION...USED MAINLY TO DIFFERENTIATE
THEM FROM TORNADIC WINDS.
