AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SALT LAKE CITY UT
955 AM MDT SUN MAY 3 2015

.SYNOPSIS...A MILD AND INCREASINGLY MOIST WEST TO SOUTHWEST FLOW
WILL REMAIN OVER UTAH THROUGH EARLY NEXT WEEK. A SLOW MOVING
DISTURBANCE WILL IMPACT THE REGION WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY.

&&

.DISCUSSION...PARTLY TO MOSTLY CLOUDY SKIES ARE IN PLACE ACROSS
MUCH OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING THIS MORNING...AS A MOIST MID-
LEVEL AIRMASS CONTINUES TO LINGER OVER THE REGION. THERE ARE
RELATIVELY FEW SYNOPTIC-SCALE DETAILS TO TALK ABOUT...WITH A BROAD
BUT LOW AMPLITUDE HIGH PRESSURE RIDGE ACROSS MUCH OF THE
SOUTHWESTERN CONUS...AND A LIGHT BUT STEADY WEST-SOUTHWESTERLY
FLOW ALOFT OVER UTAH. AFTERNOON THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED AGAIN
TODAY...AND WITH LITTLE FORCING THESE SHOULD CONTINUE TO BE
AIRMASS THUNDERSTORMS PRIMARILY INITIATING OFF THE HIGHER TERRAIN.

A VERY WEAK PACIFIC TROUGH WILL MOVE INTO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
THIS AFTERNOON...AND IS ONLY WORTH MENTIONING BECAUSE IT IS
FORECAST TO STRENGTHEN AS IT MOVES INLAND AND THROUGH THE DESERT
SOUTHWEST MONDAY. WHILE THIS LOW MAY REMAIN TOO FAR SOUTH TO
DIRECTLY IMPACT UTAH...IT SHOULD STILL HELP INCREASE MOISTURE
ACROSS THE AREA FOR INCREASED CONVECTION MONDAY AND TUESDAY.

UPDATED THE FORECAST EARLIER THIS MORNING...PRIMARILY TO INCREASE
CLOUD COVER AND INTRODUCE SLIGHT CHANCE POPS FOR THE MORNING
ACROSS SOUTHERN UTAH. KEPT THE PREDOMINANTLY PARTLY CLOUDY
FORECAST IN THE AFTERNOON FOR NOW...AS CLOUDS ARE EXPECTED TO
SCATTER OUT IN MANY LOCATIONS WITH INCREASED SOLAR HEATING. NO
ADDITIONAL UPDATES ARE ANTICIPATED THIS MORNING.

&&

.AVIATION...VFR CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED AT KSLC THROUGHOUT THE VALID
TAF PERIOD. SOUTHEAST WINDS WILL PREVAIL THROUGH AROUND
19Z...BEFORE SHIFTING TO A NORTHWEST LAKE BREEZE. THERE IS A 10
PERCENT CHANCE FOR HIGH-BASED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS FROM 19Z
UNTIL 02Z. THE MAIN THREAT FROM THE CONVECTIVE ACTIVITY WILL BE
ERRATIC GUSTY WINDS. EXPECT A RETURN TO A SOUTHEAST DRAINAGE WIND
AROUND 03Z.
