AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE POCATELLO ID
329 AM MDT WED APR 15 2015

.SHORT TERM...TODAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT.
SNOW CONTINUES THIS MORNING IN SNAKE RIVER PLAIN AND EASTERN AND
SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS. WILL LET SNAKE RIVER PLAIN WINTER WEATHER
ADVISORY EXPIRE AT 4 AM. LOOKING AT WEB CAMS IT APPEARS MOST
ACCUMULATION HAS BEEN ON GRASSY AND LIMITED ON ROADWAYS. ALTHOUGH
SNOW WILL CONTINUE FOR MANY THROUGH THE MORNING THINK MOST
ACCUMULATION WILL BE ON GRASS ESPECIALLY AFTER SUNRISE. MAIN ISSUE
ON ROADS WILL BE BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES. ADVISORY IN EASTERN
HIGHLANDS CONTINUES UNTIL NOON AS HEAVER SNOW HAS BEEN DRIFTING
EAST OUT OF SNAKE RIVER PLAIN AND COULD CONTINUE THERE INTO THE
AFTERNOON. EXPECT ANOTHER INCH OR SO IN SNAKE RIVER PLAIN AND 1 TO
3 INCHES IN SOUTHEAST AND EASTERN MOUNTAINS. SOME PRECIPITATION
COULD LINGER TONIGHT IN SOUTHEAST CORNER WITH DRY CONDITIONS
EXPECTED THURSDAY AND FRIDAY. BREEZY CONDITIONS WILL CONTINUE OVER
A GOOD PORTION OF THE AREA WITH 15 TO 25 MPH WINDS EXPECTED MAINLY
IN THE SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS AND SNAKE RIVER PLAIN. IT WILL BE
EXTREMELY COLD TODAY WITH HIGH TEMPERATURES AS MUCH AS 10 TO 15
DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. A WARMING TREND WILL COMMENCE THURSDAY AS AN
UPPER LEVEL RIDGE BUILDS IN FROM THE WEST WITH NEAR NORMAL HIGH
TEMPERATURES TOMORROW AND WELL ABOVE NORMAL CONDITIONS EXPECTED
FRIDAY.
GK

.LONG TERM...SATURDAY THROUGH NEXT TUESDAY. SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY
MODELS CONTINUE THE PRESENCE OF A HIGH PRESSURE RIDGE OVER THE
WASHINGTON AND OREGON COAST LINE WITH A NORTHWESTERLY FLOW PATTERN
ACROSS SOUTHEAST IDAHO. THE MAIN DIFFERENCE IN HOW MUCH MOISTURE IS
PRESENT OVER THE CENTRAL MOUNTAINS AND EASTERN HIGHLANDS VARIES
SLIGHTLY WITH EACH RUN AND REALLY MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO MAKE LITTLE
TWEAKS TO THE FORECAST THAT HAVE ANY MERIT. BY TUESDAY...DIFFERENCES
ARE A LITTLE BIGGER. THE GFS IS BRINGING A LOW PRESSURE DISTURBANCE
INTO THE WEST COAST FURTHER SOUTH TOWARDS LOS ANGELES OVERT HE
ECMWF. BUT BOTH MODELS FIND A WAY TO INCREASE MOISTURE AND POTENTIAL
FOR SHOWERS IN SOUTHEAST IDAHO. RS
&&

.AVIATION....OUR LOW PRESSURE TROUGH IS CLOSING OFF A CIRCULATION
OVER NORTHERN UTAH THIS MORNING AND CONTINUING TO MOVE TOWARDS
COLORADO. THIS LEAVES WRAP AROUND MOISTURE AND SHOWERS IN THE
VICINITY OF KIDA AND KPIH THROUGH ABOUT 16/00Z. SNOW LEVELS LIFT
FROM THE VALLEY FLOORS TO ABOUT 5000 FEET MSL LATER THIS AFTERNOON.
THUS SHOWERS OF SNOW WILL PLAGUE BOTH TAF SITES WITH MVFR CEILINGS.
SURFACE WINDS REMAIN BREEZY BUT FROM THE NORTH TODAY. RS
