AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SALT LAKE CITY UT
852 PM MDT MON APR 13 2015

.SYNOPSIS...A COLD VIGOROUS PACIFIC STORM SYSTEM WILL MOVE INTO
THE REGION TUESDAY AND LINGER THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT. HIGH
PRESSURE WILL RETURN LATE IN THE WEEK.

&&

.DISCUSSION...A COLD UPPER TROF IS MOVING INTO THE PACNW STATES
EARLY THIS EVE WITH A MILD DRY SWLY FLOW OVER THE CWA. THIS TROF
CROSSES THE GREAT BASIN TUE AND SENDS A STRONG COLD FRONT INTO OUR
CWA DURING THE AFTN. EXPECT STRONG SWLY WINDS AHEAD OF THE FRONT
WITH STRONG NWLY WINDS BEHIND IT AND EXISTING WIND HIGHLIGHTS
COVER THE SITUATION.

EXPECT THE FRONT TO ARRIVE IN THE SLC AREA SHORTLY AFTER NOON BUT
PRECIP COULD LAG THE INITIAL WIND SHIFT BY A COUPLE OF HOURS. DO
EXPECT FAIRLY WIDESPREAD PRECIP TO FILL IN ALONG THE WASATCH FRONT
SOUTH TO ABOUT THE DELTA FILLMORE AREA BY LATE IN THE DAY. IT
SHOULD START AS RAIN IN THE VALLEYS THEN SWITCH OVER TO SNOW
BEFORE SUNSET. THE NRN MTNS SHOULD GET HIT FAIRLY HARD WITH
NEAR BLIZZARD CONDITIONS POSSIBLE FOR A FEW HOURS MID TO LATE
AFTN IN HEAVY FALLING SNOW WITH STRONG WINDS. THIS SHOULD
SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACT TRAVEL OVER ALL MTN ROUTES AND WILL LIKELY
INTERFERE WITH THE AFTN COMMUTE OVER PARLEYS TO THE WASATCH
BACK...AND NOT JUST AT THE SUMMIT. CURRENT WINTER WEATHER
HIGHLIGHTS WILL REMAIN UNCHANGED.

EC AND GFS CONTINUE TO DIFFER ON WHERE THE TROF CLOSES OFF INTO
AN UPPER LOW WITH THE EC FARTHER SOUTH BY WED MORNING. THE GFS
POSITION OVER SWRN WY WOULD BE FAVORABLE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD
OF COLD MOIST NWLY FLOW FROM MIDNIGHT TUE NIGHT THRU WED FOR THE
WASATCH FRONT WITH POTENTIAL SIGNIFICANT SNOW ACCUMULATION IN THE
MTNS AND EVEN ON THE BENCHES. THE FARTHER SOUTH EC ONLY GENERATES
WRAP AROUND PRECIP FOR THE WASATCH FRONT EARLY WED BEFORE THE
FLOW VEERS AROUND TO ELY AND SHUTS THIS DOWN.

ALL GUIDANCE KEEPS A COLD AIRMASS IN PLACE THRU THU WITH
WIDESPREAD FREEZING TEMPS POSSIBLE AS EARLY AS WED MORNING
CONTINUING THU MORNING AND LOCALLY INTO FRI MORNING.

NO UPDATES PLANNED AT THIS TIME.

&&

.AVIATION...WINDS AT THE SLC TERMINAL WILL REMAIN SOUTHERLY
OVERNIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING. THEY ARE EXPECTED TO BECOME
GUSTY AFTER ABOUT 07-08Z AND EXCEED 26KT AFTER ABOUT 15Z WITH A
30 PERCENT CHANCE THIS HAPPENS AS EARLY AS 12Z. WINDS WILL SHIFT
TO THE NW AROUND 19Z AND STAY GUSTY. CIGS SHOULD FALL TO 6000 FT
OR BELOW AFTER 19Z WITH IFR CONDITIONS IN SNOW POSSIBLE BEGINNING
AROUND 23Z.
