HAWAIIAN ISLANDS SATELLITE INTERPRETATION MESSAGE
NWS CENTRAL PACIFIC HURRICANE CENTER HONOLULU HI
0530 UTC SAT APR 25 2015

BASED ON DATA THROUGH 0500 UTC APRIL 25 2015

A SLOW MOVING COLD FRONT LOCATED ABOUT 200 MILES NORTHWEST OF KAUAI
IS PRODUCING A 300 MILE-WIDE CLOUD BAND BETWEEN 17N AND 30N FROM
160W TO 165W. EMBEDDED THUNDERSTORMS CAN BE DISCERNED WITHIN THE
CLOUD BAND ABOUT 150 MILES WEST OF KAUAI ALONG A LINE FROM 20N164W
TO 30N160W. THUNDERSTORM TOPS ARE REACHING 45 THOUSAND FEET. THE
SURFACE LOW ASSOCIATED WITH THE FRONT IS CENTERED OVER 28N167W AND
IS MOVING SLOWLY TOWARD THE NORTHEAST. A SWIRL IN THE LOW LEVEL
CLOUDS DISCERNS THE POSITION OF THE LOW. WEST OF THE LOW...BETWEEN
170W AND THE DATELINE FROM 20N TO 30N...BROKEN LOW CLOUDS ARE MOVING
SOUTH AT 20 TO 30 MPH.

EAST OF THE LOW AND HAWAIIAN ISLANDS...LOW CLOUDS ARE MOVING WEST AT
15 TO 25 MPH PROPELLED BY HIGH PRESSURE CENTERED NEAR 35N 145W.
OVERCAST LOW CLOUDS DOMINATE THE AREA BETWEEN 140W AND 150W FROM 15N
TO 30N WHILE SCATTERED TO BROKEN LOW CLOUDS COVER THE REST OF THE
AREA EAST OF 155W TO 140W FROM 10N TO 30N.

THE SUBTROPICAL JET IS ADVECTING MID AND HIGH LEVEL MOISTURE FROM
THE DEEP TROPICS AND SENDING MOISTURE IN THE FORM OF HIGH CLOUDS
OVER THE BIG ISLAND AND MAUI COUNTY. THE AXIS OF THE JET RUNS FROM
10N 168W THEN OVER THE BIG ISLAND AND CONTINUES TO THE NORTHEAST.
SATELLITE DERIVED CLOUD MOTION SHOWS THESE HIGH CLOUDS ARE MOVING
70 TO 90 MPH TOWARD THE NORTHEAST.

OVER HAWAII...BROKEN TO OVERCAST SKIES THAT FORMED FROM AFTERNOON
CONVECTION OVER THE ISLANDS ARE SLOWLY DISSIPATING THIS EVENING.
THIN CIRRUS CONTINUES TO RIDE OVER THE BIG ISLAND AND MAUI COUNTY.

IN THE DEEP TROPICS...SCATTERED MODERATE TO STRONG THUNDERSTORMS ARE
FIRING ALONG THE INTERTROPICAL CONVERGENCE ZONE BETWEEN 140W AND
165W FROM 01N TO 08N...WITH SCATTERED MODERATE THUNDERSTORMS FOUND
BETWEEN 170W AND THE DATELINE FROM 01N TO 10N. THUNDERSTORM TOPS ARE
REACHING AS HIGH AS 56 THOUSAND FEET.
