JANUARY 2009 – Warmer and Drier than Normal

     The average temperature for Rock Springs was 24.9 degrees which was 5.9 degrees above normal.  The highest temperature was 48 degrees which occurred on the 8th.  The lowest reading was 11 degrees below zero which
occurred on both the 4th and 5th.  Rock Springs tied a record high temperature on the 21st with 46 degrees,
a record previously set in 1981.

      Total precipitation for the month was 0.32 inches which was 52 percent of normal.  The highest daily precipitation
was 0.14 inches which fell on the 23rd.

 

      The peak wind gust occurred on the 27th with 61 mph out of the west.

 

FEBRUARY 2009 – Warmer and Drier than Normal

     The average temperature for Rock Springs was 27.1 degrees which was 4.4 degrees above normal. The highest temperature was 50 degrees which occurred on the 25th.  The lowest temperature was 8 degree which occurred
on the 13th.  No daily records were set during the month of February.

     Total precipitation for the month was 0.14 inches which was 27 percent of normal.  The greatest daily precipitation

of 0.04 inches fell on the 4th.

 

      The peak wind gust occurred on the 2nd with 49 mph out of the west.

 

MARCH 2009 – Drier than Normal, Near Normal Precipitation

    March started out unseasonably mild in Rock Springs with three consecutive high temperature records either set or
tied:  58 on the 2nd, 59 on the 3rd, and 55 on the 4th (tie). The average temperature for Rock Springs was
32.2 degrees which was 0.6 degrees above normal. The highest reading was 64 degrees which occurred on the 21st.
The lowest reading was 3 above zero which occurred on the 27th. No record lows were broken during the month.

     Total precipitation for the month was 0.59 inches which was 76 percent of normal.  The greatest daily precipitation
occurred on the 23rd with 0.31 inches.

     The highest wind gust for the month was 59 mph out of the northeast on the 26th.

 

APRIL 2009 – Wetter than Normal, Near Normal Temperatures

 

     The average temperature for Rock Springs was 32.2 degrees which was 0.6 degrees below normal. The
highest reading was 71 degrees which occurred on the 23rd.  The lowest reading was 14 which occurred on the 5th.

No daily temperature records were set during the month.

 

     Total precipitation for the month was 1.64 inches which was 73 percent of normal. The greatest daily precipitation
occurred on the 25th when 0.58 inches of precipitation fell, and this total also set a daily precipitation record for the
date.

 

     The highest wind gust for the month was 59 mph out of the west on the 23rd.

 

MAY 2009 – Warmer and Drier than Normal

     The average temperature for Rock Springs was 52.4 degrees which was 3.1 degrees above normal. The
highest reading was 82 degrees which occurred on the 18th. The lowest reading was 27 which occurred on the 9th.
No daily temperature records were set during the month.  

     Total precipitation for the month was 1.01 inches which was 74 percent of normal.  The greatest daily precipitation
total of 0.61 fell on the 2nd.


    
The highest wind gust for the month was 62 mph out of the west on the 12th, which also tied the highest wind
gust recorded in 2009. 

 

JUNE 2009 – Cooler and Wetter than Normal

      The average temperature for Rock Springs was 57.2 degrees which was 2.4 degrees below normal.  The highest
reading was 86 degrees which occurred on the 30th. The lowest reading was 37 which occurred on the 2nd
No daily temperature records were set in June.

 

     Total precipitation for the month was 1.21 inches which was 178 percent of normal. The highest daily precipitation
total was 0.33 inches which fell on the 26th.

 

     The highest recorded wind gust was 58 mph out of the west southwest which occurred on the 13th.

 

JULY 2009 – Drier and Slightly Warmer than Normal

     The average temperature for Rock Springs was 67.7 degrees which was 0.9 degrees above normal. The highest
reading was 92 degrees which occurred on the 23rd. The lowest reading was 45 which
occurred on the 30th. No daily
temperature records were set in July.

     Total precipitation for the month was 0.55 inches which was 59 percent of normal.   The greatest daily precipitation
total occurred on the 3rd with 0.23 inches.

 

     The highest recorded wind gust was 52 mph out of the northwest which occurred on the 27th.

 

AUGUST 2009 – Wetter than Normal, Near Normal Temperatures

      The average temperature for Rock Springs was 65.1 degrees which was 0.1 degrees below normal. 
The highest reading for the month and year was 93 degrees which occurred on the 22nd, and this temperature

also set a new record high for the date.  A high of 91 degrees on the 3rd tied a daily record high.  The lowest
reading was 38 which occurred on the 16th.  A low temperature of 45 degrees on the 8th tied a daily record low.

 

     Total precipitation for the month was 0.83 inches which was 143 percent of normal.  The greatest daily precipitation
total occurred on the 6th with 0.52 inches.

 

     The highest recorded wind gust was 60 mph out of the southwest which occurred on the 6th.

 

SEPTEMBER 2009 – 8th Warmest on Record, Drier than Normal

      The average temperature for Rock Springs was 60.1 degrees which was 5.2 degrees above normal; the 8th
warmest September on record. The highest reading was 85 degrees which occurred on the 3rd.  The lowest reading
was 29 which occurred on the 30th.  No daily temperature records were set during the month.

      Total precipitation for the month was 0.52 inches which was 60 percent of normal.  The highest daily precipitation
total was 0.25 inches which fell on the 15th.

OCTOBER 2009 – 2nd Coldest on Record

 

     The average temperature for Rock Springs was 37.6 degrees which was 5.9 degrees below normal, the second
coldest October on record.  The coldest October on record was in 1969 with an average temperature of 35.9 degrees.
The highest reading was 68 degrees which occurred on the 18th.  The lowest reading was 13 degrees which occurred
on the 29th.

total was 0.40 inches which fell on the 4th, this total was also a new daily record for the date.

NOVEMBER 2009 – Warmer and Drier than Normal

      The average temperature for Rock Springs was 33.7 degrees which was 4.9 degrees above normal.  The highest
reading for the month was 66 degrees on the 5th.
, a new record high for the date.  A record high temperature of 61
degrees was set on the 11th. The coldest reading was 10 degrees on the 29th.   No record low temperatures
were set during the month.

 

     Total precipitation for the month was only 0.20 inches which was only 32 percent of normal.  The greatest daily
precipitation fell on the 22nd with 0.13 inches.

 

     The highest recorded wind gust was 45 mph out of the west southwest occurred on the 6th.

 

DECEMBER 2009 – 5th Coldest on Record, 10th Driest on Record

      The average temperature for Lander was 15.3 degrees which was 4.9 degrees below normal, and ties December
1983 for the 5th coldest December on record.  The highest reading was 40 degrees which occurred on the 1st
The lowest reading was 12 degrees below zero which occurred on the 8th. There were no new temperature records
set in December.

      Total precipitation for the month was 0.15 inches which was 25 percent of normal, and the 10th driest December on
record.  The highest daily precipitation total was 0.10 of an inch which fell on the 13th.  

     The peak wind gust of 55 mph out of the west occurred on the 1st.
