2004 Roars in Like a Lion Across the West
January 2, 2004 - Holiday
travelers were challenged, as the third strong storm system moved
into the west in a little over a week. Moist westerly flow
coupled with a vigorous upper level disturbance plowed into western
Wyoming on New Years Eve bringing 1 to 3 feet of new fallen snow across
the western mountains and valleys. A strong pressure gradient
accompanied this storm system allowing winds to whip up, creating near
blizzard and white-out conditions. Winds gusted to as high as 57 mph
(~ 9PM @ Jackson Airport) causing numerous roads to be closed, including Teton Pass, and limiting travel on other roads throughout the Jackson and
Star Valleys.
Thanks to the help of our spotters and
cooperative observers, we have compiled a list of snowfall totals
extending from New Years Eve through Friday (January 2nd) morning.
