...TORNADO DAMAGE CONFIRMED IN PHELPS COUNTY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN SPRINGFIELD HAS DETERMINED THAT A
TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN ALONG THE NORTHWEST EDGE OF ST. JAMES AND
TRACKED EASTWARD THROUGH THE TOWN OF ST. JAMES DAMAGING NUMEROUS
BUILDINGS...UPROOTING TREES...AND DOWNING LARGE NUMBER OR
POWERLINES. THE DAMAGE PATH WAS APPROXIMATELY 1/8TH TO 1/4 MILE WIDE
AND THE TORNADO WAS ON THE GROUND FOR APPROXIMATELY 3 MILES.
PRELIMINARY INDICATIONS ARE THAT THE MAXIMUM DAMAGE FOUND IN THE ST.
JAMES AREA WAS RATED AT THE UPPER END OF F1 INTENSITY. F1 TORNADO
DAMAGE IS INDICATIVE OF WIND SPEEDS OF 73 TO 112 MPH.
