August 2012 was the first month of the year where Springfield and much of the Missouri Ozarks had below normal monthly temperatures. In fact, you have to go back to October of 2011 for the previous below normal month for Springfield. The beginning of August started off like much of the Summer with sweltering heat across the area and temperatures in the upper 90s to over 100 degrees. The upper level pattern shifted during the month bringing a northwest flow aloft and more fronts into the area. This allowed for more precipitation and cooler temperatures. In fact, there were several record low temperatures set in the eastern Ozarks during the middle portion of August. Finally, the last day of the month brought much needed rainfall to the area as the remnants of Tropical system "Isaac" lifted north into western Missouri. This precipitation brought monthly amounts to slightly above normal for parts of southern Missouri while central Missouri remained below normal.
