A few records were set for the month of January 2009 with one date having record highs, the other with a record low max temperatures. Overall, the average temperature for the month of January 2009 across all but south central Missouri and extreme southeast Kansas was below normal. South central Missouri was slightly above normalfor tem, peratures and precipitation. The month was a roller coaster of temperatures as quite a few strong Canadian air masses passed through the region only to be replaced by strong southerly flow and warm weather. The cold and dry air masses kept precipitation totals below normal readings in most locations. The first significant snowfall of the season aoccured late in the month as ice, sleet and snow fell across the ozarks. Locations across the region received as little as a dusting in extreme southeast Kansas to as much as 9 inches of accumulation in central and south central Missouri.
