January 26-28, 2009 Winter Storm Summary

Ahead of a slow moving storm system in the Southwest, warm Gulf moisture streaming over a much colder airmass anchored over the Plains and the Ozarks produced an extended period of winter precipitation across Southeast Kansas and Southwest Missouri. Widespread freezing rain, sleet and snow fell across the region with significant accumulation. When the storm system moved into the Plains and the Ozarks, a final round of precipitation fell in the form of snow.

Freezing rain, with ice accumulation over an inch in some areas, predominately fell across South Central Missouri. This ice accumulation on trees and powerlines  resulted in extensive power outages in portions of South Central Missouri.

Snow and sleet accumulations are greatest along and south of the Interstate 44 corridor where 3 to 6 inches of accumulation is common with locally higher amounts.

Lighter amounts of precipitation fell across the Osage Plain and the Central Ozarks.
