Detailed Snow Reports

A STRONG WINTER STORM PRODUCED HEAVY SNOW AND BLIZZARD
CONDITIONS OVER PARTS OF NORTHEASTERN WYOMING AND WESTERN
SOUTH DAKOTA FRIDAY AND FRIDAY NIGHT. THE HEAVIEST SNOW
FELL IN THE NORTHERN BLACK HILLS...WHERE 1 TO 2 FEET WERE
GENERALLY REPORTED. SNOWFALL OF 6 TO 12 INCHES WAS ALSO
REPORTED OVER MUCH OF NORTHEASTERN WYOMING...AND ALSO IN
PARTS OF MEADE AND SHANNON COUNTIES IN WESTERN SOUTH
DAKOTA.
TEMPERATURES REMAINED ABOVE FREEZING FOR MOST OF THE
EVENT OVER CENTRAL SOUTH DAKOTA...THUS ONLY 1 TO 3 INCHES
OF SNOW GENERALLY FELL THERE. SNOWFALL WAS STRONGLY
DEPENDENT ON ELEVATION SINCE TEMPERATURES WERE CLOSE TO
FREEZING. RIVER VALLEYS SUCH AS THE CHEYENNE AND WHITE
RECEIVED VERY LITTLE SNOW...WHILE HIGHER ELEVATIONS JUST
10 TO 20 MILES AWAY RECEIVED SEVERAL INCHES MORE. THERE
WERE ALSO SEVERAL LOCATIONS IN WESTERN AND CENTRAL SOUTH
DAKOTA THAT RECEIVED OVER HALF AN INCH OF RAIN BEFORE THE
RAIN CHANGED TO SNOW.
VERY LITTLE ACCUMULATING SNOW FELL IN MOST OF CUSTER AND
PARTS OF CENTRAL PENNINGTON COUNTIES. THIS OCCURRED
BECAUSE OF THE DOWNSLOPING FLOW OF AIR COMING FROM THE
NORTHERN BLACK HILLS...WHICH TENDS TO SIGNIFICANTLY
REDUCE THE SNOWFALL IN THESE AREAS. CUSTER ONLY REPORTED
FLURRIES.
