MAY 2005 CLIMATIC SUMMARY

Cool and wet weather characterized May. A strong storm on the 8th and 9th dropped 1 to 2 inches of rain over northeastern Wyoming and northwestern South Dakota; with 2 to 3 inches of rain in the northern Black Hills. Another strong storm brought heavy snows and rains to the region on the 11th and 12th.  Snowfall of 5 to 10 inches was reported over northeastern Wyoming and far western South Dakota, with 1 to 2 inches of rainfall on the plains of South Dakota east of Rapid City. Two more storms dropped one half to one inch of rain across the region on the 24th and 25th, and again on the 30th and 31st.\

May was a cool month as temperatures averaged 3 to 5 degrees below normal. No location reported above normal temperatures. Spearfish was the hot spot averaging 0.5 degrees below normal, while Milesville 5NE was the cool spot averaging 8.6 degrees below normal.

May was also wet as precipitation averaged 30 to 50 percent above normal. Only 4 locations reported below normal precipitation.  Mission 14S was the dry spot receiving 90 percent of normal precipitation, while Lemmon was the wet spot receiving 227 percent of normal precipitation.
