JUNE 2005 CLIMATIC SUMMARY

The first two weeks of June were cool and wet. Strong thunderstorms on the 13th produced heavy rains across southwestern and south central South Dakota, with several locations reporting 2 to 3 inches of rainfall. There were also numerous reports of severe weather with these storms.  The last half of June was characterized by hot and dry weather. Another round of strong thunderstorms on the 24th produced severe weather and localized heavy rainfall over southwestern South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming.

Temperatures averaged near normal for the month. Spearfish was the hot spots averaging 2.8 degrees above normal, while Oelrichs was the cool spot averaging 1.2 degrees below normal.

Overall, rainfall also averaged near normal for the month.  South central South Dakota was the wettest area receiving 150 to 200 percent of normal rainfall, while the Black Hills, northeastern Wyoming and northwestern South Dakota received 50 to 75 percent of normal rainfall.  Mount Rushmore was the dry spot receiving only 42 percent of normal rainfall, while Wood was the wet spot receiving 211 percent of normal rainfall.
