July 2012 Climatic Summary
 
July temperatures were well above average across the area this month, with many locations experiencing their 2nd or 3rd warmest July on record. The average monthly temperature was 5 to 6 degrees above normal across the region. The location with the highest departure in July was Mission 14S, with an average temperature of 7.0 degrees above normal.
 
Precipitation in July averaged around 87 percent of normal across the entire area, but coverage was far from even. Precipitation was well above average across northeastern Wyoming, the Black Hills, and into far northwestern South Dakota. Camp Crook recorded 5.05 inches of rain, which was 237% of average. Sundance received 3.92 inches of rain, which was 180% of average. South central South Dakota was well below average, with Winner only receiving 0.38 inches of rain (13% of average), and Interior only recorded 0.15 inches of rain (6% of average).
 
July significant storm summary...
 
July 5th – Severe thunderstorms crossed northeastern Wyoming and the Black Hills and weakened as they moved east onto the plains. Wind gusts from 60 to 90 mph were recorded across northern Campbell County into northern Butte County, with a few reports of quarter to half dollar sized hail.
 
July 16th – Severe storms crossed northwestern South Dakota on this day. Quarter to half dollar sized hail fell across the area. In addition, strong wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph were found with these storms.

July 17th – Strong to severe storms crossed northeastern Wyoming and the Black Hills during the afternoon and evening hours. Wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph were reported, along with penny to quarter sized hail.

July 23rd, 24th, and 27th – Strong to severe storms developed over parts of western South Dakota. Wind gusts of 55 to 70 mph were reported, along with penny to quarter sized hail.
