September 2008 Climatic Summary

September temperatures were near normal, averaging 0.5 degrees below normal to 0.5 degrees above normal. Spearfish was the warm spot averaging 2.7 degrees above normal. The cold spot was at Devils Tower in northeast Wyoming where temperatures averaged 3.3 degrees below normal.

Precipitation in September was 5 to 15 percent above normal. The wettest areas were across the northern Black Hills, Bear Lodge Mountains and the plains of northeast Wyoming where precipitation averaged 150 to 250 percent of normal. The driest areas were across northwestern and southwestern South Dakota where precipitation was 60 to 80 percent of normal. The wet spot was at Interior 3NE where precipitation was 223 percent of normal, while Ludlow 3SSE was the dry spot with only 32 percent of normal precipitation. The precipitation surplus for the month averaged 0.14 inches.  No snowfall was reported in September.

On September 3, an isolated severe thunderstorm produced 58 mph winds 9 miles north of Edgemont in Fall River County.
 
On September 7, numerous cold air funnels were reported near Gillette, Wyoming. No damage was reported.
 
On September 21, an isolated severe thunderstorm produced penny sized hail 11 miles north of Porcupine in Shannon County.

On September 22, severe thunderstorms produced large hail and damaging winds across Shannon, Haakon and Jackson counties. Winds gusted to 60 mph 5 miles northeast of Porcupine in Shannon County. Hail from 1.5 to 2.5 inches in diameter fell across Haakon and Jackson counties.
