September 2010 Climatic Summary

September temperatures were near normal, averaging from 0.5 degrees below normal to 0.5 degrees above normal. Spearfish was the warm spot averaging 4.1 degrees above normal. The cold spot was in Winner where temperatures averaged 4.3 degrees below normal.
Precipitation in September average 15 to 30 percent above normal. The wettest areas were across the northwest and north central portions of western South Dakota where precipitation averaged 200 to 300 percent of normal. The driest areas were across northeast Wyoming and the northern Black Hills where precipitation averaged 20 to 40 percent of normal. The wet spot was at Redig 11NE where precipitation was 343 percent of normal. Dillinger and Gillette 4SE in northeastern Wyoming were the dry spots with only 18 percent of normal precipitation. The precipitation surplus for the month averaged 0.23 inches.
No snowfall was reported in September.


September storm summary...

On September 5…An isolated severe thunderstorm moved through Harding County producing 68 mph winds at Buffalo and tennis ball size hail 3 miles south of Redig. The storm also dropped 1.50 inches of rain 15 miles northeast of Redig with pea size hail covering the ground. 

On September 9…An isolated severe thunderstorm produced quarter size hail and 60 mph winds 7 miles southeast of Hermosa, and 1.48 inches of rain 1 mile west of Hermosa in Custer County. Another severe thunderstorm produced 69 mph winds at Faith in northern Meade County.
 
On September 15…An isolated severe thunderstorm produced golf ball size hail in Wasta in Pennington County.
 
On September 22…An isolated severe thunderstorm produced quarter size hail in Colome in Tripp County.
