November 2009 Climatic Summary

November was a very warm month, with temperatures averaging 7 to 9 degrees above normal. All locations reported above normal temperatures. Spearfish was the warm spot averaging 13.2 degrees above normal. The 47.3 degree average temperature at Spearfish was the warmest November on record, breaking the old record of 46.6 degrees set in 1999. The cold spot was at Pactola Dam where temperatures averaged 5.9 degrees above normal.
November was very dry, with precipitation averaging just 20 to 30 percent of normal. Oelrichs and Oglala 1S were the only locations reporting above normal precipitation. The wettest area was across southwestern South Dakota where precipitation averaged 80 to 100 percent of normal. Elsewhere, precipitation generally averaged less than 20 percent of normal. The wet spot was at Oelrichs where precipitation was 265 percent of normal. The dry spots were Bison, Dupree, Faith and Colony, WY. where no precipitation was reported for the month. These four locations and Lemmon, Maurine 12SW, Spearfish and Redig 11NE all reported the driest November’s on record. The precipitation deficit for the month averaged 0.58 inches.
Snowfall was sparse in November. The Black Hills averaged only 3 to 7 inches. Across northwest South Dakota snowfall averaged 2 inches or less. Elsewhere, most locations on the plains of northeast Wyoming and western South Dakota reported no snow.
