December 12, 2000 Record Cold Blasts The Region

Several records for cold temperatures have been broken in the last few days. Here is a look at some of those records.

  • A record warm streak broken in Rapid City...The record for the most days without falling below zero was broken on Sunday morning Dec 10th, 2000 when the temperature fell below zero.  The record was 705 days without falling below zero. The last date Rapid City had gone below zero was January 4th, 1999 when the thermometer dropped to 7 below zero.
  • Low temperature record at the Rapid City Airport on Monday...The temperature dropped to 19 below zero on Monday evening, which was a record low for Monday, December 11th.  The previous record was 18 below in 1932.
  • Numerous record lows set across the region Monday night and Tuesday morning...The following is a list of the record lows across northeastern Wyoming and western South Dakota.
