May 1-2, 2008 Blizzard Sets Snowfall Records

The blizzard that struck portions of northeastern Wyoming and western South Dakota April 30 through May 2 set daily and monthly records from several official weather observing sites.  They include:

Spearfish:
14.0 inches on May 1; 10.0 inches on May 2
Set daily record for May; previous record was 9.0 inches on May 1, 1967
Set monthly record for May: 24 inches; previous record was 10.5 inches in 1950

Lead:
15.3 inches on May 1; 39.2 inches on May 2
Set daily record for May; previous record was 25.0 inches on May 9, 1965.  The 39.2 inches is also the fourth highest single day snowfall ever (all months)
Set monthly record for May: 54.5 inches; previous record was 37.5 inches in 1965

Rapid City NWS (downtown):
Daily record set for May: 12.0 inches on May 2; previous record was 10.8 inches on May 7, 1950
Storm total of 13.3 inches is the third most snow in May; the record is 19.2 in 1892

Rapid City Airport:
Daily record set for May: 11.0 inches on May 2; previous record was 7.5 inches on May 11, 2005
11.0 inches is the second most snow in May; the record is 11.6 inches in 1950

Ft. Meade:
Daily record set for May: 12.0 inches on May 2; previous record was 10.0 inches on May 9, 1965
12.0 inches is the second most snow in May; the record is 16.0 inches in 1965

Hot Springs:
Daily record set for May: 8.0 inches on May 2; previous record was 5.0 inches on May 12, 2005, May 7, 1950, and May 5, 1942.
8.0 inches is the third most snow in May; the record is 11.3 inches in 1950

Newell:
12.0 inches on May 2; record is 15.8 inches on May 1, 1967
12.0 inches is the second most snow in May; record is 15.8 inches in 1967
