…DROUGHT CONDITIONS INTENSIFYING ACROSS WESTERN SOUTH DAKOTA AND NORTHEASTERN WYOMING…

AS OF JUNE 15th…SEVERE DROUGHT CONDITIONS HAVE DEVELOPED ACROSS EASTERN HAAKON AND ZIEBACH COUNTIES. MODERATE DROUGHT CONDITIONS PERSIST ACROSS NORTHEASTERN WYOMING AND PERKINS…WESTERN ZIEBACH…WESTERN HAAKON AND EASTERN MEADE COUNTIES IN WESTERN SOUTH DAKOTA. DURING THE PAST 30 DAYS MODERATE DROUGHT CONDITIONS HAVE ALSO SPREAD INTO JACKSON…MELLETTE…TRIPP AND EASTERN PENNINGTON COUNTIES. ABNORMALLY DRY CONDITIONS HAVE EXPANDED ACROSS THE REST OF WESTERN SOUTH DAKOTA…WITH THE EXCEPTION OF FAR NORTHWESTERN HARDING COUNTY.

PRECIPITATION DURING THE MONTH OF MAY WAS WELL BELOW NORMAL ON THE PLAINS OF NORTHEASTERN WYOMING AND WESTERN SOUTH DAKOTA. THE BLACK HILLS…NORTHERN FOOTHILLS AND BEAR LODGE MOUNTAINS SAW NEAR NORMAL TO SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL PRECIPITATON. RAINFALL WAS 70 TO 90 PERCENT OF NORMAL ACROSS THE WYOMING PLAINS AND 30 TO 60 PERCENT OF NORMAL ACROSS THE SOUTH DAKOTA PLAINS. A FEW SPOTS IN SOUTH CENTRAL SOUTH DAKOTA RECEIVED VERY LITTLE MOISTURE. WINNER ONLY RECEIVED 0.28 INCHES OF RAINFALL WHICH WAS 7 PERCENT OF NORMAL AND WOOD ONLY RECEIVED 0.11 INCHES WHICH WAS 3 PERCENT OF NORMAL RAINFALL FOR THE MONTH OF MAY.

WITH SLIGHT FALLS ACROSS THE SOUTHERN AND CENTRAL BLACK HILLS AND IN NORTHWESTERN SOUTH DAKOTA. THE TABLE BELOW SHOWS RESERVOIR PERCENT OF NORMAL CAPACITY AND CHANGE IN ELEVATION OVER THE PAST 30 DAYS AS CALCULATED BY THE BUREAU OF RECLAMATION.

DROUGHT CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE ACROSS WESTERN SOUTH DAKOTA AND NORTHEASTERN WYOMING THROUGH SEPTEMBER. IF NORMAL OR ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL OCCURS DURING THIS PERIOD SOME IMPROVEMENT IN DROUGHT CONDITIONS CAN BE EXPECTED.
